In 2021, Krakow's first citizen assembly, the Krakow Climate Assembly, was held to discuss climate change and the city's climate neutrality. It was attended by a group of citizens, representative of the whole city in terms of socio-demographic and spatial characteristics: gender, age group, district of residence and education level.

 

The aim of the Climate Assembly was: 

  • increasing the focus of public awareness discussions around the climate crisis; 
  • to build a climate transition supportive community of: residents, experts, community organisations and businesses; 
  • gathering a pool of ideas on energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy; 
  • to obtain recommendations for joint action by the city and residents; 
  • gaining broad acceptance for the city's transformation efforts. 

 

The Krakow Climate Assembly was a success. The result of its work was the development 32 high quality recommendations which, according to the adopted assumptions, are binding for the Mayor of the City of Krakow.

Group study visit to Krakow, Poland

With around 800,000 residents, Kraków is one of Poland’s EU Mission Cities and a partner in the NEEST pilot project developing practical tools to reduce emissions from buildings. In 2021, the city convened its first Climate Assembly, which strengthened public awareness and community involvement in the transition, and produced 32 recommendations on energy efficiency and renewable energy that were formally adopted as binding commitments for the Mayor and integrated into city policy.

Co-Producing a new Air Quality Plan for the Małopolska Region - Krakow Technology Park (KTP)

The Krakow Technology Park orchestrated and led the development of the new Air Protection Program of the Malopolska region to be adopted by public bodies, industry and other businesses in order to reduce their emissions significantly until 2023. The official document of the plan was co-produced with all affected stakeholders including citizens during co-design workshops and consultation meetings. Furthermore, a hackathon resulted in the concept for a digital platform making emission data from industry publicly accessible and transparent for everyone.
